According to Blizzard it is expected that players can choose the fate of WOTLK Gold their characters once this Burning Crusade Classic pre-patch arrives at a date that is yet to be determined.

Once that happens, players will find two different client versions of WOTLK Classic that are compatible with that original edition of the game that includes “Classic Era” servers, and the other specifically for Burning Crusade Classic, which also includes “Progression” servers. Each players characters will appear on both of the clients.

However, logging in to the character in a particular client will prompt the user whether they wish to “activate” the character for this particular version of the game. If a player activates one of their characters on an account on the Burning Crusade Classic game client but it’s not playable with the existing WOTLK Classic client (and in reverse).

The good news is players needn’t make decisions immediately at the time of pre-patch day. The option will be available until a choice is made (or most likely, until a different expansion launches in the future).

It is technically possible for players to have an option to remove every difficulty out of this decision and choose both options as well: Once the patch’s pre-release arrives, Blizzard will be taking a virtual “snapshot” of each character in the game, including the entire gear, gold, and items.

If they pay a cost players will be able to “clone” their character’s snapshots. The original character can be transferred into Burning Crusade Classic, while the cloned version remains at the beginning of WOTLK Classic, keeping all of their gold, items and gold as snapshotted on the day of the pre-patch buy WOW WOTLK Classic Gold. Cloning, however cost real money, even though Blizzard has not yet disclosed the cost.
