RuneScape was a passion project created by OSRS GP three brothers in their parent’s kitchen. They built it using gratis software provided by gaming magazines. It was monetized so that they could justify working on it full-time, but with it being totally free to play.

From the kitchen They eventually rented their first office, and were still making their own desks and computers while they conducted interviews for potential employees. It’s a charming story that is believed by all of us to be true and that it can be repeated across the business.

In New World. The most recent MMO is run by Amazon which has horrendous violations of workers’ rights and an extremely rich CEO. It’s already costing $40 to sign up, and you can also get microtransactions on top of that. In all likelihood, RuneScape popularized the live service model a few years before major players started to adopt it but its competitors have re-invented the idea.

“It really wasn’t making any money, but we’d invested so much effort up to this point and there were so many people enjoying the games,” said Andrew Gower in one of buy RS gold the book’s many interviews. “It was exciting to watch 2,000 to 3,000 gamers playing the game at the same time. There were a ton of people on the forums and loving RuneScape. I just wanted to continue to develop it. It was good fun, even though it wasn’t very profitable”.
