Botulism is caused by exposure to the botulinum toxin, usually produced by an anaerobic bacteria known as Clostridium botulinum. The toxin inhibits the communication between the brain and muscles and can prove to be fatal if left untreated as it can prevent the proper functioning of vital organs including the lungs.
