Exams coming up, need to learn terms, quotes, prepare a retelling? There are several ways to help you memorize study material quickly.

The first step is to choose a way to memorize based on your type of perception. If you find it easier to memorize images, learn the material through associations. If you perceive information better by ear, then use audio recordings. If you like to practice manual labor, then write down information and take notes. If you like to organize everything, then draw tables and charts. Now let’s talk more about each method.

Writing an outline

Abstract or report, which you need to memorize, divide into small blocks – 3-4 paragraphs each. Read the first block, write out the main theses, reread your notes and try to repeat the material from memory. Then check whether you have memorized everything correctly; if necessary, reread the theses one more time.

Structuring your text

This method is suitable if there is no need to memorize the text word-for-word, but rather prepare a retelling, for example of literature or history. It is needed cause I understand that nobody will write my essay for free and you should understand that too. To do this, you need to read the chapter/paragraph a couple of times, at the same time write out unknown terms, find their meaning and learn. Then highlight the blocks of meaning and title each one. Then write an outline of the text, dividing it into paragraphs and writing out the key points under each block. Try to retell the text based on the prepared outline.

Audio Recordings

The method is convenient for memorizing a text in a foreign language. The first time just read the story, write down the translation of words you don’t understand. Then turn on the recorder and read it for the second time. Then turn on the tape and listen to it, stopping at each sentence and repeating it. Try to play the text yourself, and if you missed something, listen to the tape again.

The pictogram method

The method will appeal to those with a well-developed imagination and who like to draw pictures and diagrams. Break a report or a passage of text into meaningful blocks, then draw a diagram or a picture for each fragment. Try retelling the text from memory, focusing on the notes. If a difficult rule or theory causes you difficulty, draw an intelligence map. You can find out how to do this in our last article.
